Paul Shawler, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center and conducts his clinical work at OU Physician’s Child Study Center. He is a licensed child clinical psychologist and received his graduate training at Oklahoma State University.

Dr. Shawler received training in the treatment of Selective Mutism from Dr. Steven Kurtz in 2017. He visited Dr. Kurtz program in New York and was grateful to have Dr. Kurtz provide in-person training in Oklahoma. Dr. Shawler and his colleagues, Dr. Funderburk and Ms. Standiford, LPC, have successfully replicated the Mighty Mouth Kids Camp in Oklahoma City since 2017. He and Dr. Funderburk direct the center’s Selective Mutism Services, providing both the intensive behavioral model and family therapy services. Services include the Parent-Child Interaction Therapy modification for Selective Mutism and cognitive behavioral therapy that utilizes behavioral exposures. Dr. Shawler works closely with many graduate training programs in Oklahoma to spread the availability of treatment.

Dr. Shawler is a core faculty member of the Leadership in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (LEND) Program, a national interdisciplinary training program for families and advanced graduate students to learn more about working with those with intellectual and developmental disabilities. He has published in the areas of parent-child interaction and early childhood behavior problems, early intervention for autism spectrum disorder, and primary care interventions for parents. He was appointed by the Governor of Oklahoma to serve on the State Advisory Group for Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. The appointment recognized Dr. Shawler’s expertise in child maltreatment, serving youth with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and his work in policy initiatives for delivering evidence-based mental services to youth. He provides ongoing consultation and training to home-visiting programs on the topics of parenting and engagement, child behavior, and early recognition of children with developmental delays and other mental health conditions. Dr. Shawler is a Master Training in an evidence-based treatment for youth with Problematic Sexual Behavior, is a Level 1 training in Parent-Child Interaction Therapy, and serves as a psychologist in the Oklahoma National Guard.
