Description: For treating professionals, it can sometimes be challenging to stay on top of the latest research in the field, despite best intentions. Journal articles are not always easily accessible, and even when they are available, it can be difficult to carve out time to read them, especially amid myriad other responsibilities. Yet, maintaining awareness of the latest research developments can offer providers important guidance in assessing, conceptualizing, and treating youth with selective mutism, potentially leading to more robust treatment outcomes. Thus, this webinar, hosted by SMA Board Member and child psychologist, Dr. Rachel Merson, will provide an overview of selected selective mutism research, focusing on new treatment outcome studies as well as papers that offer insight into factors that may cause, maintain, and/or be associated with selective mutism. While this webinar will be geared to a professional audience, parents and caretakers of youth with selective mutism may also find it interesting to learn more about recently conducted SM research.

Speaker: Rachel Merson, Psy.D. is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences at Boston University and the Clinical Director of the Child and Adolescent Fear and Anxiety Treatment Program at BU’s Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders (Child CARD). Dr. Merson has extensive experience providing evidence-based treatment to children and adolescents with a range of anxiety disorders and co-occurring emotional and behavioral concerns. As Director of Child CARD’s Selective Mutism Program, she oversees Brave Bunch, Child CARD’s intensive group treatment program for young children with SM. In addition, Dr. Merson is actively involved in providing supervision and training to Child CARD graduate students and trainees. She frequently conducts workshops with schools and community agencies on selective mutism and other topics related to child anxiety.
