Louise Tedford, Ph.D.
Dr. Louise Tedford is a licensed psychologist in Austin, Texas. She earned her doctoral degree from The University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Tedford has experience in a variety of settings including schools, a day treatment program, community mental health centers, and private practice. She specializes in working with children and adolescents, with a special interest in anxiety disorders including selective mutism.
Dr. Tedford uses a treatment approach that incorporates primarily cognitive behavioral techniques for treating anxiety. She helps children to better understand their feelings, use coping techniques to manage physical symptoms, and learn how to use “brave thoughts.” For selective mutism, she works with children and families to develop a hierarchy of situations in which the child will gradually face his or her fear of speaking. To help generalize the gains made in the office setting, Dr. Tedford will guide families in how to set up practice sessions in the “real world.” Because the school setting is an area of great difficulty for many children with selective mutism, Dr. Tedford consults with teachers and school staff to develop a plan for school-based interventions as well.
