Confident Kids Celebrations: Halloween in Chelsea, MI

October 31, 2018

Children with Selective Mutism may be impacted in many situations due to their anxiety about communication; one of the most challenging things for parents is to see their child struggle to participate in holiday traditions that should be fun and exciting, such as going trick-or-treating or interacting with Santa Claus. Confident Kids Celebrations will include a series of holiday events intended to provide children with SM the opportunity to verbally participate in various traditional holiday and seasonal celebrations, potentially for the very first time. Each Celebrations event will also include a group lesson, affording children with SM the opportunity to also practice being brave by speaking with new, similarly-aged children, speaking in front of a small group, and playing verbal games in groups.

Like its predecessor, our highly-regarded Confident Kids Camp, this treatment program uses the same evidence-based exposure therapy model—meaning participants will get practice speaking to new people in the actual setting where they should be brave.

Confident Kids Celebrations events are intended to supplement ongoing intervention efforts that families are already using in their home and school environments. They would also be a good refresher or way to build up additional momentum to accomplish a significant or especially challenging brave talking goal.
