Mighty Mouth Kids Camp is our 5-day SM Intensive Group is based on the same Brave Buddies SM model that was originally created by Dr. Steven Kurtz at the NYU Child Study Center and later brought to the Child Mind Institute. Dr. Kurtz has trained teams of professionals in Chicago, Boston, Miami, Hong Kong, Oklahoma City, Seattle and Vancouver, Canada to replicate this program. Professionals have come from California, Texas, Florida, Maryland, and even Canada, Norway, and Israel to study the program with Dr. Kurtz. The program has been featured on ABC’s Nightline program.
Who: Children with SM and related anxiety problems 3-9 years old.
What: Mighty Mouth Kids Camp is structured like a typical school day – with warm-up time, Morning Meeting, activity sessions, snack, lunch, field trips and the famed Prize Store, where the kids “shop” for toy prizes using the Brave Talking points they earned throughout the day. During the week they practice all the situations that are tough such as Show ‘n’ Tell, Expert Demonstration, taking attendance, etc. Our staff is trained by the licensed experts who created the program – Dr. Steven Kurtz and his training team lead by Dr. Shelley Avny, our Training Director.
When: August 28, 2017 – September 1, 2017 for the actual camp. The “lead-in” session typically occur the week before. Daily sessions are 9:00am – 2:00pm. Parent training, including our live parent coaching is essential to the program and occurs each day of the program from 9:15-10:45.
Camp Location: We use the Temple Israel NYC school to best simulate the real classroom situations your children and students are in when they struggle with SM. We also go on numerous field trips for community exposures – Central Park and Bloomingdales are among the favorites! Temple Israel is near our main offices on 57th Street.
Process: After an initial intake evaluation, we do lead-in sessions to help prepare the children for the weeklong program. The goal of the lead-ins is to talk to 2 counselors and in front of at least 1 child, without the parents present. That way we know when they come into the group they will be ready to verbally participate (as well as non-verbally).
Other Providers: Many families are already working with other therapists. We are more than happy to coordinate care with other therapists or doctors you may be working with.
