The Selective Mutism Week Long Intensive Group is based on the Brave Buddies model pioneered by Dr. Kurtz at the NYU Child Study Center and later brought to the Child Mind Institute. Dr. Kurtz has trained teams of professionals in Chicago, Boston, Miami, Hong Kong, and Vancouver, Canada to replicate this program. Professionals have come from California, Texas, Florida, Maryland, and even Canada, Norway, and Israel to study the program with Dr. Kurtz. The program has been featured on ABC’s Nightline program.
After an intake evaluation, we do lead-in sessions to help prepare the children for the weeklong program. The goal of the lead-ins is to talk to 2 counselors and in front of at least 1 child, without the parents present. That way we know when they come into the group they will be ready to verbally participate (as well as non-verbally). In this group intensive, we work with children 3-9 years old with selective mutism (SM) who are in treatment with us or in treatment with another professional.
