WeSpeak is the first behavioral group intensive designed specifically for older youth with SM and significant social anxiety. Simulating all aspects of the school and social environment, WeSpeak provides middle schoolers the opportunity to practice talking across a variety of contexts – targeting many of the verbal and social demands/expectations of this age group. WeSpeak uses a one-to-one mentor model so that each child has a trained adult working with them to provide support and guide their practice. Goals are highly individualized, and exposure practices are done carefully and systematically to ensure that kids are building confidence and skills as they progress. Parent training is also included, so that parents can learn the necessary tools to support and coach their kids after the program.
The program was developed by Dr. Shelley Avny, who remains committed to ensuring that each child experiences success, not just during that week but in the long-term. We are thrilled to announce that we are expanding WeSpeak to include a three month follow-up intervention period, which will combine individual family consultations, tween practice video groups, and ongoing parent training. We are optimistic that this model will give kids the best chance of translating their progress to their home/school environment.
