WeSpeak is an intensive behavioral group intervention for tweens and teens with SM and significant social anxiety. Simulating all aspects of the school and social environment, WeSpeak provides middle schoolers the opportunity to practice talking across a variety of contexts – targeting many of the verbal and social demands/expectations of this age group. WeSpeak uses a one-to-one mentor model so that each child has a trained adult working with them to provide support and guide their practice. Goals are highly individualized, and exposure practices are done carefully and systematically to ensure that kids are building confidence and skills as the progress. Parent training is also included, so that parents can learn the necessary tools to support and coach their kids after the program.
The program was developed by Dr. Shelley Avny, who has served as the “lead teacher” and clinical supervisor of six cohorts over the last three years. We are pleased to announce that Dr. Lauren Knickerbocker, clinical assistant professor at the NYU Child Study Center, has joined the WeSpeak team as a co-leader and collaborator!
*Note: See July 2019 session for 14-17 year olds.
