Karen Levine, Ph.D., Psychologist
Dr. Levine works with children with SM and their families integrating a behavioral treatment paradigm with a playful and engaging developmental, relationship-based approach. She incorporates interactive individualized fun and humor, based on what the child finds fun and funny, as a means to reduce anxiety, while working stepwise to increase the child’s comfort and speaking across different people, places and situations. Karen works closely with parents, other providers, and the child’s school team through phone and/or in-person collaboration. Karen also works with the child and family around other fears or phobias the child may have such as separation, using public bathrooms, doctor visits etc.
Karen comes to treating children with SM from a 25 year background in working with children with anxiety as well as children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and with Williams Syndrome, at Boston Children’s Hospital and Cambridge Health Alliance. Her recent book, Attacking Anxiety (Jessica Kingsley, 2015) outlines the playful engaging approach she uses to structuring gradual exposures in treating children’s phobias. She holds an academic appointment of Lecturer on Psychiatry, Harvard Medical School.
Karen is in private practice in Lexington MA. She often collaborates with Randi Loeb, MS, CCC-SLP, of Lexington, MA, also a professional provider for children with SM.
