Laura Kirmayer, Phd, MSW
Laura Kirmayer, Phd, MSW is a clinical psychologist with extensive training and experience in the evaluation and evidence based treatment of early childhood anxiety. Laura is a clinician with Milestones Psychology in New York City where she is actively developing programs to decrease the barriers in accessing empirically based treatment for children with early anxiety disorders.
Laura was the prior Director of the Brave Buddies program, an innovative intensive behavioral therapy intervention for children with Selective Mutism, at the Child Mind Institute. She completed her Clinical Social Work degree at the University of Pennsylvania and practiced as a clinical social worker with a specialization in trauma and grief for over 12 years before returning to school for a doctorate in clinical psychology. She returned to school with a desire to integrate research into her clinical practice and completed her doctorate in clinical psychology from the New School for Social Research. During her doctoral training, Laura held externships at New York-Presbyterian Hospital- Weill Cornell Medical Center, Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center and Beth Israel Medical Center. She completed an internship with Columbia Medical School- Stanley Morgan Children’s Hospital. Laura loves working with the early childhood population and has extensive training in the evidence based assessment and treatment of Anxiety, ADHD, Disruptive Behavior Disorders, Trauma and Grief.
She is a certified Parent Child Interaction Therapist (PCIT), with clinical expertise in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), exposure plus response prevention (E/RP), trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT), and many other evidence based treatments. She has significant experience in the administration of comprehensive neuropsychological evaluations with the early childhood population and specialized training in Zero to Three diagnostics.
Laura’s research interests are in the development of improved diagnostic tools and treatment interventions for the early childhood population. She has been invited to present across the country on her expertise and is passionate about disseminating accurate information on childhood psychiatric conditions and training others in the effective evaluation and intervention of complex presentations.
