Lisa Gioia, M.S., L.M.F.T.
Lisa Gioia is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with a private practice in Pleasanton. She has worked with children, teens and families for 35 years, including children with selective mutism. Prior to her private practice, she spent 16 years as the Clinical Supervisor for City of Fremont Youth and Family Services and 15 years as a Family Counselor and then Clinical Supervisor for Hayward Police Department’s Youth and Family Services Bureau. She has worked closely with schools including sitting on School Attendance Review Board with two districts, developing a school based mental health program in the Fremont schools, and providing/coordinating crisis and critical incident interventions. She has her school counseling credential (PPSC) and, in addition to her clinic-based work, enjoyed doing school based mental health services K-12. She taught courses at various San Francisco Bay Area Master’s and Doctoral programs including Law and Ethics, Child Therapy, Family Therapy, Individual Therapy, and Clinical Practicum. She is a well-respected supervisor for therapists-in-training, having worked with over 200 graduate and post-graduate students.
In her clinical work, Ms. Gioia incorporates an integrative approach that includes concepts of family systems, narrative, cognitive behavioral, behavioral, and expressive therapies (including play therapy). She believes that people have different styles of learning, and this impacts how they view their problems as well as avenues to change. She utilizes a variety of techniques so that she can personalize the therapy. When working with children and adolescents she also works collaboratively with parents, families, and schools. Recently, she assisted Dr. Catherine Eckel with a 2-day “Freedom Camp” for kids with selective mutism and provided follow-up “mini” school based intensives for several campers prior to their first days of the new academic year.
Ms. Gioia received her Bachelor of Science in Child Development from University of California at Davis. Her advanced education includes a Masters of Science in Counseling Psychology from California State University East Bay and a Pupil Personnel Services Credential (School Counseling) from St. Mary’s College of California. In March of 2016 she completed the advanced training and consultation through the Selective Mutism Group’s Selective Mutism Proficiency Program.
