Dr. William Benson is a staff psychologist at CBT/DBT Associates in midtown Manhattan. He has extensive training in evidence-based, behavioral treatments for selective mutism and social anxiety in children. Dr. Benson earned his doctorate in clinical psychology at Rutgers University Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology, consistently regarded as one of the top doctor of psychology degree programs in the country. Prior to his doctoral training, Dr. Benson graduated summa cum laude from Tulane University with a B.S. in psychology, with departmental honors.

Dr. Benson completed an APA-accredited pre-doctoral internship at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, consistently ranked as a Top Ten Honor Roll children’s hospital by US News and World Report, where he specialized in providing evidence-based behavioral and cognitive-behavioral interventions and psychoeducational assessments for children, adolescents, and young adults with a variety of clinical concerns in outpatient, emergency department, and inpatient settings. During this internship, he also served as Clinical Instructor of Pediatrics for The Ohio State University. Dr. Benson completed his postdoctoral fellowship at the Child Study Center at NYU Langone Health, where he also served as Clinical Instructor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. During this fellowship, Dr. Benson specialized in individual and group treatment for selective mutism and coordinated the SM intensive treatment services (“Camp Courage”) at the Child Study Center, where this type of treatment was pioneered.

Dr. Benson is a member of the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies (ABCT) and the Society of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology (Division 53 of the American Psychological Association).
